Dyslexia /Specific Learning Disability (SpLD) Diagnostic Assessments

These are appropriate for those with a history of struggling with aspects of literacy such as learning to read and spell. Handwriting, written expression, reading comprehension and numeracy skills may also be affected.  Performance in literacy may be unexpectedly poor in relation to other skills (e.g. verbal language abilities or other subject areas), but this is not always the case.

Assessments are carried out by an experienced and  well-qualified specialist assessor. Qualifications include: BA Hons (Psychology), MA (Psychology/Learning Disabilities), PGCE (Primary), Diploma (Dyslexia and Literacy), AMBDA and a current Assessment Practising Certificate.

Assessments are suitable for those over 6 years to adult. They are also appropriate for students applying for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).

The assessment involves initial information gathering via questionnaire and discussion with parents (where appropriate), followed by use of psychometric tests which measure various areas of  attainment (e.g. reading, spelling, numeracy, handwriting and reading comprehension skills), underlying abilities (i.e. verbal and visual ability or IQ) and finally, underlying cognitive processing  (e.g. memory and processing speed).

The assessment usually takes between 2 and 3 hours and can be carried out over one or more sessions depending upon the individual. Detailed reports summarising and explaining findings and making appropriate teaching and other recommendations are provided within 14 days of the assessment. (Follow-up discussion appointments are also included if required).

Diagnostic Assessments:  £280 (January 2013)
